Finally--the original cast album from Respect: A musical Journey of Women. Songs go from "Someone to Watch Over Me" to"I will Survive." It's the journey of women, told through Top-40 music. From the codependence of "I will follow him" to the anger of "These Boots are Made for Walking," to the cynicism of "What's Love Got to Do with it," and finally to the strength of "Hero." Combining excerpts of 32 songs, the album traces women's development--through music.

For more than the first half of the last century, the voice of women in Top-40 popular music has been one of neediness and dependency. It'll do anything for you; just be my baby, even if you're no good and treat me bad; just LOVE me and I'll stand by my man. By the end of the century, things were quite different. Popular music had come far enough so that women looked for the hero within themselves, were urged to get on their feet and make it happen, ready to stand on her own with or without a man. Messages encompassed "I am woman hear me roar," to "I will survive" and encouraged women to find their own dreams.

The original cast of RESPECT ran to sell-out crowds at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts in West Palm Beach from July 16 through October 17 and then opened at the Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs, FL on November 19 and will open at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts April 17, 2005.

RESPECT - THE BOOK

"RESPECT is a highly creative book that uses the musical history of women throughout the past century as a spring-board to synthesize cultural, political and world events, as well as business, psychology, and spirituality. It inspires women by showing that our leadership comes from a will-ingness to move beyond the conventional path and forge our own way." -DR. MARY LYNN PULLY, The Center for Creative Leadership

An entertaining and unique look at the role of women in 20th century America through well-known songs. Dorothy Marcic has created a fascinating and original story chronicling the development of women. Using the country's Top 40 hits with archetypes, lyrics, and personal stories from 1900 through 2000, she shows how in the early part of the century song lyrics resonated with women's dependency and compliant natures; echoed their eventual rebellion in the late 1960s; and mirrored their development as mature, independent persons in the '90s.

Although Marcic gives a strong nod to many of this century's influential women (including Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Sanger, Lillian G ilbreth, Estˇe Lauder, Barbara Wal-ters, Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, Andrea Jung, and Vera Wang), she emphasizes that most songs did not celebrate their unusual success, but instead highlighted the traumas for the majority of women.

A wonderful opportunity to revisit this country's most popular songs and to develop a new understanding of women and their issues throughout the past century.

"RESPECT provides an insightful view of the link be-tween the events of the time, the emergence of women's voices in popular music, and the changing role of women in society...it is a unique chronicle of the developing power of women."
